Our Programme

Innovative Learning

Learning through play

As part of our childcare program, we encourage your child to learn though play. Play helps young children to learn and develop through doing and talking, which research has shown to be the means by which young children learn to think.

Our Groups

Communication friendly spaces

At Abacus we have recently refurbished all of the nursery and pre-school playrooms to provide an environment which not only has a homely, natural feel but which is specifically set out and structured in such a way to enhance the experiences for all children. The layout of the rooms alongside the colour scheme and stimulating activities on offer has been specifically based around recent research on how to maximise children's cognitive (brain) development. To find out further information about the reasons behind this, please click here.

Panda & Koala

he Panda and Koala group is for 0 to 2 year old children and is divided into two playrooms. We have a separate cot room and also our own garden area with direct access through our French doors. We present a stimulating environment in which adult led and child led activities are provided to support children’s growth and development.

Hippo

The Hippo group is for 2 to 3 year old children and has two spacious playrooms, cloakroom, toilet and nappy change plus their own garden area. Each day provides planned activities for free play, adult led and child initiated activities, small group time, story/song times and flexible garden time. This age group experiences various transitions including toileting, sleep, independence and ability to communicate through language.

Elephant

The Elephant group for 3 – 5 year old children has a large playroom with direct access to their garden area to promote choice between free flow of play indoors or outdoors. A variety of adult led activities is planned across the seven areas of learning, enabling children to progress and develop key skills.

All children in the Elephant group will participate in the clubs we offer such as cookery club, forest school and have play opportunities to use the mud kitchen as part of their day care routine.

Open to children during school holidays and is available Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm. Children must have already started school and aged 4+. (The upper age limit is subject to consideration of whether the club still meets the needs of the child but limited to primary aged children). We understand that children are on their school holidays and therefore naturally follow their interests whilst having adult led morning and afternoon activities planned which children can choose to join in with.

Board games, messy play, outdoor games, malleable materials, creative activities, construction items, computer and small world items (cars, dolls etc…) are always available for children to use alongside an adult led morning and afternoon activity. An example of our Discovery planning can be found by clicking here. We were delighted to feature on BBC Radio Bristol in December 2016. You can hear the children giving their views on events of 2016 by scrolling to the 44 minute and 44 second mark after clicking here.

The cost per day is £25.00 and includes breakfast (before 8:30am), lunch and tea as required plus all drinks and snacks.

How our staff look after your children

At AbacusDay Nursery and pre school we maintain the ratio of adults to children in the setting that is set through the Safeguarding and Welfare Requirements. The babies and children will be supervised at all times, both indoors and outdoors, as part of our high quality childcare provision. All our staff members have the relevant childcare qualification or are working towards gaining one. This helps us to:

- Give time and attention to each child; - Talk with the children about their interests and activities;

- Help children to experience and benefit from the activities we provide; and

- Allow the children to explore and be adventurous in a safe and secure environment

Abacus is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and learners. We expect all staff, parents/carers and volunteers to share this commitment.  All staff undergo appropriate DBS checks and vetting as part of the safer recruitment process.  The Designated Safeguarding persons are Adam Driscoll-Price and Tanya Siddorn.
